Nussir is a mountain, not a mine! – Call to action against the “Nussir mine” beyond liberal environmentalism in Norwegian-Occupied Sápmi

This is a global call to action against the copper-mine currently under construction in Riehpovuotna (called “Repparfjord” by the colonizers), in Norwegian-occupied Sápmi.

1. WHAT IS THIS?

This is a global call to action against the copper-mine currently under construction in Riehpovuotna (called “Repparfjord” by the colonizers), in Norwegian-occupied Sápmi.The Canadian company Blue Moon Metals (BMM) – full owner of the mine’s operator Nussir ASA – is actively involved in the colonization of Sámi ancestral lands through the construction of two copper and precious metals mines in the region. This is part of a rapid expansion of corporate extractivism stemming from the EU’s Critical Minerals Act, as the “Nussir mine” has been named a “Strategic Project,” allowing for large land grabs and cutting through any environmental or Indigenous land protection under the banner of a so-called “Green Transition”. More information on the history of the land and the numerous Sámi-led struggles, can be found in the later sections.

Message to the Climate Movement

Throughout the last decade, both in Europe and beyond, a new generation of activists has brought the climate movement to the forefront. Groups such as Extinction Rebellion, Fridays for Future, and Ende Gelände have succeeded in breaking out of the sidelines, convincing millions to commit themselves in defence of the planet. It wasn’t so long ago that few were even aware of the possibility of climate catastrophe – nowadays the very opposite is the case. I have no intention to downplay these achievements. What I do want to draw attention to, however, is that climate activism has made little or no difference to something very important, to the only thing which really counts: to actually lowering the amount of carbon emitted by humans across the planet. Such emissions continue to increase every year, as do average global temperatures, weather catastrophes, and rates of species extinction. Earning recognition from across society has not been enough. In all of its core aims, the climate movement remains a decisive failure.

El conflicto en Abya Yala y sus cercanías al “Switch Off!”.

Palabras anárquicas respecto a la necesaria lucha por la tierra.

¡Ante la devastación: sabotaje y guerra! Así como lo han entendido lxs compañerxs que levantan y se hacen parte de la campaña “Switch Off! The system of destruction” (Apagar! El sistema de destrucción)[1], consistente en el “ataque contra empresas e infraestructuras que alimentan la catástrofe ecológica en todo el mundo”. También aquí, en Abya Yala (nombre ancestral del territorio conocido como América), se han desarrollado múltiples luchas por la defensa de la tierra, desde los pueblos precoloniales que aún combaten, hasta nuevas perspectivas anárquicas que se vuelcan cada vez más hacia la lucha por la tierra. Si bien no estamos exentxs de no poder detener totalmente la catástrofe ecológica, podemos encontrar ejemplos concretos de victorias territoriales que han logrado frenar, expulsar o al menos hacer retroceder considerablemente la materialización de proyectos extractivistas, como lo hace la resistencia y ofensiva armada de diversas organizaciones mapuche en Wallmapu. Las luchas en las distintas latitudes no son ajenas entre sí y apuntan hacia los mismos enemigos. Por esto creemos propicio fraternar y hacer propia la campaña “Switch Off!” dotándola de nuestras propias circunstancias territoriales y así no pasar por alto nuestras particularidades.

Hace un año en Europa se ha iniciado una campaña de ataque contra empresas e infraestructuras que alimentan la catástrofe ecológica en todo el mundo, titulada Switch Off!, que en español quiere decir Apagar. Grandes y pequeñas acciones se han posicionado en ofensiva desde la preocupación y necesidad de enfrentar un evidente colapso eco sistémico provocado por la maquinaria capitalista global que destruye todo a su paso.

La intencionalidad de la campaña está en “atacar al sistema de forma sostenible”, situando la acción directa en un contexto en común a través de la comunicación anonima de unas con otras, invitando a armarse con medios propios y pasar a la ofensiva contra las infraestructuras productivas y con ello la propiedad, sin caer en falsas ilusiones discursivas, institucionales y/o tecnológicas, “dejando en claro que no puede haber una alternativa verde capitalista, ni paz con las condiciones existentes”.

En un primer comunicado de presentación podemos ver con mayor exactitud cual es el transfondo y objetivo del por qué invitar a la utilización de la consigna “Switch Off!”:

La certeza de que el sistema actual provocará el colapso del ecosistema enormemente dañado ya ha conmovido a innumerables personas y las ha llevado a resistir. Decenas de miles de personas salen a las calles contra el «avance» de la máquina capitalista, la gente resiste en masa a los proyectos destructivos a gran escala, la infraestructura del sistema está siendo bloqueada y valientes combatientes prenden fuego a las máquinas que roban de su sustento.

Switch Off! The system of destruction

A partire dall’inizio dell’anno è iniziata a diffondersi una chiamata all’azione diretta, che fino a ora ha principlamente circolato solo nei paesi di lingua tedesca. Con questa traduzione vogliamo contribuire al dibattito internazionalista sull’anarchismo d’azione contro il complesso tecno-industriale.

Switch Off! – Appello alla rivolta

La certezza che l’attuale sistema porterà al collasso l’ecosistema già massicciamente danneggiato ha smosso innumerevoli persone e le ha spinte alla resistenza. Decine di migliaia di individui stanno scendendo in piazza contro la “perpetuazione” dell’apparato capitalistico, le persone si oppongono innumerevoli ai progetti distruttivi su larga scala, le infrastrutture del sistema vengono bloccate e militantx coraggiosx danno fuoco alle macchine che le quali vengono privati dei loro mezzi di sostentamento.

Ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno nella lotta contro la distruzione della natura e la conseguente miseria sociale è l’impegno comune per la vera rottura rivoluzionaria e la libertà di tuttx. Abbiamo bisogno di un’iniziativa che rifiuti tutti i compromessi e le correzioni di facciata dello Stato e che porti a una trasformazione delle nostre relazioni sociali.

La distruzione del pianeta da parte del sistema economico neoliberale è intrinsecamente legata a modelli di pensiero patriarcali, al razzismo e al colonialismo. L’iniziativa quindi deve necessariamente venire dal basso. Dalle lotte deglx esclusx. Dalle lotte di coloro che contrappongono un’unione solidale e auto-organizzata alle promesse di salvataggio dello Stato. Dalle lotte di coloro che vedono che non ci possono essere compromessi nel conflitto contro la distruzione sistemica della biosfera.

ÉTEIGNEZ LE SYSTEME DE LA DEVASTATION

Une vingtaine de personnes prennent d’assaut un chantier de construction du gazoduc Coastal Gas Link dans l’ouest du Canada. Armées de haches et de fusées éclairantes, elles menacent les employés, volent les poids-lourds, s’en servent pour détruire le bâtiment du chantier et finissent par démolir les véhicules mêmes. Les dégâts se chiffrent en millions. C’était il y a près d’un an. On ne sait toujours pas qui a saboté la construction du gazoduc dans la province de la Colombie-Britannique. Le gaz fracturé devait bientôt être acheminé par ce gazoduc, qui traverse des terres autochtones, jusqu’à la côte ouest, d’où il serait expédié vers l’Asie.

Un appel…

Que vous occupiez des universités, des écoles, des arbres ou des rues. Que vous passiez vos nuits à vous inquiéter ou à saboter. Que vous fassiez la grève ou que vous écriviez sur le sujet.

La certitude que le système actuel entraînera l’effondrement de l’écosystème fortement endommagé a déjà poussé d’innombrables personnes à entrer en résistance. Des dizaines de milliers de personnes descendent dans la rue contre le « business as usual » de la machinerie capitaliste, les gens s’opposent en masse aux grands projets destructeurs, les infrastructures du système sont bloquées et des combattantes courageuses mettent le feu aux machines qui sont utilisées pour les priver de la base même de la vie. Ce dont nous avons besoin dans la lutte contre la dévastation de la nature et la misère sociale qui en découle, c’est la quête commune d’une véritable rupture révolutionnaire et de la liberté pour toutes et tous. La poursuite d’une initiative qui rejette tous les compromis et les corrections cosmétiques de l’État et qui entraîne une transformation de nos relations sociales. Parce que la dévastation de la planète par le système économique néolibéral est inextricablement liée aux schémas de pensée patriarcaux, au racisme et au colonialisme. L’initiative doit nécessairement venir d’en bas. Des luttes des exclus. Des luttes de ceux qui mettent en œuvre une solidarité auto-organisée contre les promesses de salut de l’État. Des luttes de celles qui voient qu’il ne peut y avoir de compromis dans la lutte contre la destruction systémique de la biosphère.

Switch off!  – the system of destruction

About 20 people storm a construction site of the Coastal Gas Link pipeline in western Canada. They are armed with axes and flares, threaten employees, hijack heavy construction vehicles, destroy the site’s building and ultimately the vehicles themselves. The damage amounted to millions. That was almost a year ago. It is still unclear who sabotaged the construction of the pipeline in the province of British Columbia. Fracked gas was soon to flow through the pipeline, which runs right through indigenous land, to the West Coast, from where it would be shipped on to Asia.

A call…

Whether you occupy universities, schools, trees or streets. Whether you spend your nights worrying or sabotaging. Whether you strike or write about it.

The certainty that the current system will result in the collapse of the massively damaged ecosystem has already inspired countless people to resist. Tens of thousands are taking to the streets against the “business as usual” of the capitalist machinery, people are resisting the destructive large-scale projects en masse, the infrastructure of the system is being blocked and courageous fighters are setting fire to the machines that are being used to rob them of the very basis of life. What we need in the struggle against the destruction of nature and the resulting social misery is the shared pursuit of real revolutionary rupture and freedom of all. Pursuing an initiative that rejects all compromises and cosmetic corrections of the state and brings about a transformation of our social relations. Because the destruction of the planet by the neoliberal economic system is inextricably linked to patriarchal patterns of thought, racism and colonialism. The initiative for this must necessarily come from below. From the struggles of the excluded. From the struggles of those who enact a self-organized solidarity against the state’s promises of salvation. From the struggles of those who see that there can be no compromises in the fight against the systemic destruction of the biosphere.
